Natural Relief: How Cannabis is helping pain in Oklahoma

Posted on December 22, 2024 by James Bridges

Chronic pain is a tough beast, affecting millions globally and tens of thousands right here in Oklahoma. But there's a silver lining—medical cannabis is stepping up as a viable alternative to the usual pain meds, offering relief with fewer side effects, and it's got the green light here in our state.

So, what's the deal with cannabis and pain? It all boils down to the compounds in the plant, primarily THC and CBD, which interact with our body's own endocannabinoid system. This system plays a key role in regulating our pain levels. THC helps dial down the pain while CBD tackles inflammation and keeps you calm and collected without the high.

When picking the right cannabis strain, it’s not just about choosing between the cool-sounding names. Indica strains are generally more relaxing, so they're great for easing pain when you're winding down at night. Sativa strains, on the other hand, are more uplifting, perfect for staying active during the day. Hybrids strike a balance between the two. For a high that’s low-key, strains like Cannatonic or Harlequin, which are higher in CBD, are your go-to. But if you need something stronger for more severe pain, something like GG4 or Skywalker OG might just do the trick.

Thanks to SQ788’s green light on medical marijuana in Oklahoma, anyone with a medical marijuana card can legally buy and use it. Getting the card involves a chat with a licensed doctor and submitting a little bit of paperwork to the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority.

I’ve talked to a bunch of patients who've turned to cannabis for relief. Many swear by a mix of CBD and THC to keep pain in check, allowing them to do things without the grogginess or other side effects from pain pills. Many are looking to avoid the addictive qualities of pharmaceuticals as well.

If you're thinking about adding cannabis to your pain management plan, definitely chat with a doctor who knows their stuff. It’s all about finding the right balance to keep you feeling good without stepping on the toes of any other treatments you might be on.

So, there you have it. With the right approach and a bit of know-how, cannabis could really change the game for anyone battling chronic pain here in Oklahoma. Here's to better days ahead, with a little help from the green goddess!
