I Can’t Come Over

Posted on December 22, 2024 by James Bridges

This morning, I woke up with the usual routine on my mind, unaware that the day held a conversation that would leave a lasting mark on my soul. After getting ready, I decided to head to the store to pick up a few things, just another errand in the tapestry of daily life.

While there, I struck up a conversation with a woman, and “somehow” our discussion quickly turned to the topic of cannabis. Jokingly, I mentioned coming over to smoke with her son, but she firmly stated that she doesn't allow smoking or drinking in her house. Her words were like a clear, unwavering beacon of her values. I respected her stance and laughed, explaining that I wouldn't be able to come over because I smoke so much, my humor a gentle wave against her strong stance.

From there, the conversation took a deeper turn. I shared with her how I used to drink heavily, like a ship lost at sea, starting from a young age. I explained how cannabis has been my lifeline, helping me navigate the stormy waters of sobriety for the past five and a half years. It's been a challenging journey, but one that has profoundly changed my life, anchoring me to a healthier, more stable reality.

Her husband, who had been listening quietly, seemed to latch onto my story like a lifeline. I told him that if I could do it, he could too. It's not easy, but it's possible. His own story came to light. He shared that he had an accident earlier in his life that affected him, yet he still drinks. I could see in his eyes a flicker of understanding and hope, like a lighthouse guiding a weary sailor.

He thanked me for my advice, and there was a moment of profound connection between us. It felt like my words had made an impact, and I hope they inspire him to consider his own path, perhaps to find his own way out of the fog.

As I left the store, I felt a sense of fulfillment wash over me. It was as if this conversation was the purpose of my day, and it gave me the motivation to conquer whatever else came my way. Sometimes, these unexpected moments remind us of our purpose and the positive influence we can have on others. Today, I was reminded that even in the simplest of exchanges, we can find connection.
