When I was young, autism was extremely rare. 15 years ago the prevalence of autism had reached around 1 in 150 children. Now it is around 1 in 50 children. So what is happening? Is this “nature” or “nurture”? Environment or genetics? Well, from my perspective, it is nutritional. In my world, what you eat provides precursors to something we all have called an endocannabinoid system. In particular the ratio and amount of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are CRITICAL to how we function. These provide modulators which run our endocannabinoid system, which, it turns out, pretty much runs every system in our bodies. In fact, most diseases can be pinned to disregulations in this system.
So, would autism have any obvious disregulations in the endocannabinoid system? It turns out, YES! Those that suffer from autism have 2 major disregulations. When understood, it is also apparent why some pharma strategies work, and some do not. Mom’s and Dad’s of autistic kids will tell you this, that THC works for these kids. It works because it helps replace and regulate one of the deficiencies they have in the endocannabinoid system. In some cases, CBD’s will also help, but ONLY in conjunction with something that will upregulate the endocannabinoid system. While behaviorally it may LOOK like the way to treat these kids is by anti-anxiety and other down regulating pharma meds, this is exactly the wrong thing to do. In fact that will exacerbate any behavioral problems.
Autism is a very unique disease. The great news is that it appears to be treatable within the endocannabinoid system. There are many strategies that could be used, however, care must be used as to not downregulate or “slow the idle” of these children. That makes things worse.
